January Dividend Income

After 33 years of clocking in and out of work and religiously saving 10% annually in my 401K every year, in good times and bad, I have decided to share my monthly dividend income to show what regular saving and investing can accomplish.

For the month of January I made $3,097.88; a decrease of -3.93% versus this time last year. This decrease is a bit illusionary as a couple of typical January payers were pushed into February. First was B&G Foods (BGS) who decided to pay on Feb. 1 instead of the end of the month. The second was Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CM) who did pay a dividend in January however, due to the dividend reinvestment policy at Fidelity it will not be crediting my account until Monday.

Overall market valuations for the most part remained high but there was some softness in consumer prepared foods like SJM & GIS which I picked up during the month of January but that was short lived as prices moved back up across the sector. Going into February here are the stocks on my watch list; AbbVie (ABBV), BCE Inc (BCE), Genuine Parts Co (GPC), Leggett & Platt (LEG), Lockheed Martin (LMT), Unilever (UL), Viatris Inc. (VTRS) and Verizon (VZ).

  1. These are huge dividends! Any chance I could get your transaction list, so I could import them to digrin.com to see how a portfolio of this size would render there?

  2. Thank you and no, I am not comfortable sharing something like that. Besides some of my transactions go back slightly more than 20 years over different accounts. The effort to go back to extract all that is a quite a bit of work.

  3. Well done! The month wasn’t even over and you already have the monthly income update posted. Obviously, great work with your January totals. I look forward to following your journey. I’m sure 7 years will be here quicker than we’d like!

    • I can’t take all the credit for getting numbers out so quick, most of the work is done for me with excel. I just download all my transactions from Fidelity and then run a pivot table to segregate the data. M1 finance does not have a download function so I just take the lazy route on that line.

7 years will hopefully come quick, feels just like yesterday when my retirement date was at the 10 year mark and I was super excited then.

      • You can download your M1 data if you want — you just need to go through the actual clearing house/custodial bank as M1 does not do it themselves. Technically all your holdings are with them anyways – APEX Clearing.
